Lenten Reflection
I am rule follower. Always have been. I'm the guy who sits at the four way stop at an intersection in some small town in the middle of the night repeatedly looking left and right before I move. Perhaps being a rule follower is why Lent has always been a special time for me.
Think about it. Fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, no meat on Fridays, prayer, almsgiving and of course my favorite, giving something up for the forty days. I remember as a child being so upset if I broke one of the rules even if it was done inadvertently. Think about it. God is going to keep me out of Heaven because of a piece of chocolate I promised not to eat!
But then it hit me. Or perhaps I should say God made me aware of something very important. Our traditional Lenten practices are not simply rules to be followed. Sure, it is good that we make the effort to do what the Church prescribes, but the rules are good to follow only if they lead us to something better. Who really cares if I fast, don't eat meat, or give up chocolate, if it doesn't help to make me a better person come Easter morning. All of the Lenten practices are somewhat meaningless if my fasting, prayer, and almsgiving don't lead me to prayerfully reflect upon what God has done for me. These forty days, these rules, are there to guide me into a deeper relationship with our Lord and Savior, helping me to become the disciple God has called me to be.
So go ahead. Fast, pray, abstain, be charitable. But pray that when our Lenten Season is over, the rule following makes you a better person, transforms your heart, and brings you closer to our loving Savior Jesus Christ.
Blessings,
Fr. Brian Flynn
