October 11, 2019 DR. ELIZABETH A. MOLLOY TWOMEY '52 WAS HONORED AT CUSHING. ST. MARY'S CELEBRATES CATHOLIC EDUCATION
The evening began with a welcome from Associate Head of School David J. Angeramo who then introduced Fr. Brian Flynn to give the dinner blessing.
Head of School Dr. John F. Dolan delivered his opening remarks and welcomed the St. Mary's Chorus led by Campus Minister Michael McDuffee who did a beautiful job performing.
Dr. Ray Bastarache '65 spoke about his experience as the first St. Mary's Head of School and his relationship with Daniel Lobo '10, whom he introduced as the evening's featured speaker.
Daniel Lobo '10 was a stand-out and bright student that wanted to attend St. Mary's, but private school was financially not an option for his family. With the support of Dr. Ray Bastarache '65, St. Mary's and the Gustafson Family, a St. Mary's education became a reality for Daniel. He was able to attend St. Mary's and by his senior year was a member of the National Honor Society, ranked top 5% of his class and was accepted to Harvard, where he continued his education. Daniel said "Talent is equally distributed, but opportunity is not." He encouraged donors to support a student at St. Mary's to give them the same opportunity he was provided as he was the recipient of the first Gustafson Family Scholarship.
Margot Connell presented the William F. Connell '55 Service Award to our 2019 recipient Eliane Gustafson. Elaine is the wife of the late Paul Gustafson '59, a long-term St. Mary's scholarship donor and friend.
Later in the evening, St. Mary's Board Chair William Mosakowski took the stage and introduced this year's 23rd Cushing Society Award recipient Dr. Elizabeth Molloy Twomey '52, Vice Chair. Betty is a true champion of Catholic education and we are blessed to have her as part of the St. Mary's community.
Upon accepting this award, Dr. Elizabeth Molloy Twomey '52 delivered an inspirational message to Cushing attendees telling everyone that "as we all know, no one of us can do anything totally on our own without the support of others" and that those in attendance who support St. Mary's make it possible for our students to "go forth and set the world on fire".
The evening concluded with remarks by Head of School Dr. John F. Dolan and closed with a special presentation featuring the future of St. Mary's.
Thank you to everyone who attended St. Mary's 23rd Cushing Society Celebration and helped make the night a success, by your presence, service, support and witness. We are blessed to be part of this amazing community.
