SPARTAN NEWS COLLEGE SPOTLIGHT
Today's Spartan College Spotlight features senior Chris Rincon '21.
In the fall, Chris will be attending Merrimack College majoring in Mechanical Engineering. He is the St. Mary's recipient of the O'Brien Scholarship! The James W. O'Brien Foundation Scholarship is a fully funded tuition, room and board at Merrimack for Lynn scholars for a 5-year period.
"St. Mary's gives you more than an education. You obtain friends and family along the way too. St. Mary's helped me get to this point by allowing me to open up, get out of my comfort zone and participate in my education and service."
Congratulations Chris!
SPARTAN MASTERPIECES AT THE NEW YMCA The Director of Grants & Community Engagement from the new Demakes Family YMCA in Lynn contacted St. Mary's and asked if we would like to display some of our art in the new Y. We will be exhibiting 16 ceramic "Masterpieces"!
The history of the project: The students had the opportunity to look over about 200 masterpieces and select one that they wanted to replicate. Once a masterpiece was selected--they received a biography of the artist and the history of the painting--along with a contour line drawing of that particular painting. The next step was to spend a class looking at all the works by that particular artist.
In the third class--each artist sketched their piece of art on a 6 inch bisque ceramic tile. Then the fun started---painting! Lastly, each underglazed tile had to be fired, clear glazed and then fired again. It was a two week process. Each student displayed their masterpiece and spoke to the class about the original piece of art, why they liked this piece of art and a brief biography of the famous artist.
Here is the list of students participating:
